Short answer: you need no followers to start earning, but platforms won't pay you themselves until you pass a threshold. Affiliate links, selling your own product and deals you agree with a brand directly have no follower minimum on any platform. Platform payouts do: on Instagram, 500 followers for Gifts, 1,000 for Meta's Creator Marketplace and 10,000 for Subscriptions. TikTok's Creator Rewards Program needs 10,000 followers and 100,000 views in 30 days. YouTube starts paying at 500 subscribers (lower tier) and shares ad revenue from 1,000.
Every number below was read on the platform's own help pages on 2 November 2026: Instagram's Gifts, Creator Marketplace and Subscriptions pages, TikTok's Creator Rewards Program page, and YouTube's Partner Program and 2027 update pages. Platforms change these often and roll features out country by country, so check the page before you plan around a number.
Yes, an AI influencer can earn affiliate commissions. The catch is honesty: she has never used the product, and the FTC wants every paid link disclosed. Here's how it works, what to say, what not to say, and the exact disclosure lines.

What each one means for an AI account
Instagram Gifts (500 followers)
Viewers buy Stars and send them as gifts on your reels. Instagram's page says you receive $0.01 for every Star, paid monthly, after Instagram's own cut and the app store's (typically 30%) are taken from what the viewer paid. It is the lowest bar on any platform, and it pays per reel, so it suits an account that posts video. Gifts are not available on collaborative posts.
Meta Creator Marketplace (1,000 followers)
This isn't a payout; it's a directory where brands look for creators for branded content and partnership ads. At 1,000 followers on a public professional account, your AI influencer can be listed. Whether a brand wants a virtual creator is the brand's choice, so say plainly in the profile that the account is AI. Our guide to brand deals for AI influencers covers what brands ask.
Instagram Subscriptions (10,000 followers)
Followers pay monthly for subscriber-only reels, stories and lives. It's a fan product: it works when people want more of a character, not more of a topic. Of all the tools here it asks the most of an AI account, because a subscriber pays to feel closer to someone. Be clear that the character is AI before anyone pays.
TikTok Creator Rewards (10,000 followers and 100,000 views)
TikTok pays per 1,000 qualified views from the For You feed, once a video passes 1,000 such views. The rules that matter most for AI accounts:
Videos must be at least one minute long. Most AI influencer clips are shorter. A 15-second reel earns nothing here, however well it does.
Content must be original, "designed, filmed, and produced" by you. TikTok lists what doesn't count: content copied from others, slideshows of photos, looping videos, text-only videos, and lip syncs.
Ads, paid promotions and sponsored videos are excluded. A video can earn from a brand or from Creator Rewards, not both.
The account holder must be real. TikTok asks for authentic account information such as your real name and date of birth, and you must be 18 or older. The person running the AI character applies, with their own details.
No bought followers or views. Fake engagement gets an account removed from the program.

YouTube (500 and 1,000 subscribers)
The lower tier opens fan funding and YouTube Shopping at 500 subscribers. Ad revenue starts at 1,000 subscribers plus 4,000 watch hours or 10 million Shorts views in 90 days. From 1 February 2027 new applicants need 8,000 watch hours or 20 million Shorts views for the full program. YouTube also refuses to pay for mass-produced or repetitive content, whoever made it. We went through those rules line by line in Can you monetize AI-generated videos on YouTube?
Plan the order: what pays at 0, at 500, at 1,000, at 10,000.
What you can earn before any threshold
Before the thresholds, these are the only ways to earn, and they often pay more than platform payouts at any size:
Affiliate links. No platform sets a follower minimum for a link in your bio or description. It only pays if the character honestly fits the product, and the post needs a clear "paid link" or "ad" label. Our AI influencer affiliate guide has the FTC's rules for virtual creators.
Your own product or service. A small business with an AI face for its brand earns from its own sales from the first post. The account is a shop window, not the product.
Direct brand deals. A brand can pay a small account in a narrow niche, in cash or in product. You agree the terms; the platform takes no cut. Label it as an ad and as AI.
Your own product pays from post one.
A realistic order of steps
0 followers: choose the niche and the character; set up a professional account; add an affiliate link or your own product only where it truly fits.
500: turn on Instagram Gifts if you post reels; YouTube's lower tier if you're on YouTube.
1,000: join Meta's Creator Marketplace; YouTube ad revenue once watch hours or Shorts views also qualify.
10,000: Instagram Subscriptions; TikTok Creator Rewards, but only for videos of a minute or longer.
Getting there costs money every week, mostly for video. From our own accounts, a picture costs about $0.02 and a second of video $0.10 to $0.16, and only about half of the frames our critic reviews are good enough to keep (our numbers). Most AI accounts stall well before 10,000 because the posts look alike. Our Instagram growth guide and the weekly critic digest cover what makes people follow.
Common questions
Does an AI influencer count as a creator for these programs? The programs don't ban AI characters. They check the account holder (a real adult, with their own details where asked) and the content (original, labelled where required, within the rules). The person behind the character is the one who applies and gets paid.
Can I buy followers to reach a threshold faster? No. TikTok's page says accounts that acquire fake views or inflate follower counts are removed from its rewards program, and every Instagram tool requires you to meet Meta's Partner Monetization Policies. Bought followers also don't buy anything, so the money stays at zero.
Which platform pays first? Instagram, at 500 followers, through Gifts on reels. YouTube's lower tier opens at 500 subscribers but also needs watch hours or Shorts views. TikTok's rewards start at 10,000 followers.
Do I need 10,000 followers to get brand deals? No. Meta's marketplace opens at 1,000, and a direct deal has no minimum at all. What a brand looks for is an audience that fits its product.
Make yours
Influgen gives each AI influencer a small team of AI agents: a scout for trends in her niche, a head writer for ideas, a creative director and stylist for the shots, and a critic that checks every picture before you see it. You approve; it posts. The thresholds above are about posting well week after week, which is the part the team does.
You can create your influencer now at no cost; when your spot opens you get a 7-day trial with 50 credits and one influencer, no card needed. See what each plan includes, or create your AI influencer.

We made a 42-second talking product ad with an AI influencer and logged every cent: the script, the stills, the voice, the lip-sync, the b-roll and the sound. Then we made the same ad with an open-source pipeline. Here is where the money goes.
